Event, Construction, or Weather Temporary Parking Closures:
Occasionally parking lot closures are necessary for campus events, construction, or inclement weather. Depending on the size of the closure, the adjacent buildings’ liaisons may receive notification via email, and signage advertising the closure of the lot or area on the affected date and time will be posted in advance.
Notification to the campus about changes or closures varies and is based on the size or scope of the changes or events. Not every parking closure will be communicated via email to entire campus, as they may not be applicable to all staff and faculty. For instance, fully remote workers may not wish to receive emails about parking, and faculty and staff may not be affected by a weekend or residential parking lot closure. Presently, parking notifications are distributed through X (formerly Twitter) and a subscription-based email alert system.
When temporary closures occur, Parking Services will never close accessible parking unless there is a safety concern with the spaces remaining open.
Color Configuration Changes:
Color configuration changes are determined by reviewing parking lot occupancy, permit sales by permit type, and upcoming campus construction projects that affect parking. Major changes are drafted and reviewed with the Parking & Transportation Committee for input and guidance.
Unless there is a major construction parking closure midyear, parking changes occur primarily during the summer months, when the lots are less occupied and before the next year’s permit sales open. Any summer changes are not enforced until September 1/the start of the next fiscal year.
Notification to the campus about changes varies and is based on the size or scope of the changes. Depending on the impact of the changes, the adjacent buildings’ liaisons may receive notification via email, and signage advertising maintenance in the area are posted in advance.
Parking Services also posts on X (formerly Twitter) and sends an email through their subscription-based email alert system. The campus parking map is also updated with the new color configurations, and the parking lot signage, paint color, and/or digital lighting is updated to reflect the updated colors.
Parking Discounts or Other Financial Assistance Initiatives:
UTD Parking is an auxiliary service and is therefore entirely self-funded. Student tuition and fees are not allotted for UTD’s parking budget. Parking permit sales provide us with the necessary funds to build new parking structures, repave parking lots, improve services and provide general maintenance.
UTD Parking and Transportation Services does have a number of initiatives to ensure affordability for campus parking or transportation, including prorating permit prices monthly, reciprocal UT institution permits, applicable veteran discounts, public transportation discounts, and more.
Parking Permit Discounts, Credits, and Proration:
Veterans with vehicles that have certain decorated veteran license plates may qualify for an Accessible, Green, University Commons Residence Halls, University Village Apartments or Canyon Creek Heights Apartments permit at no cost.
Students, faculty, or staff from other UT System institutions may submit their University parking permit receipt to the Parking & Transportation Office via email to be issued a comparable reciprocal UTD permit.
Annual parking permits for employees are prorated in cost throughout the academic year, on the first of each month. Annual parking permits can be purchased via payroll deduction for eligible employees. Parking deductions are before tax deductions and may lower taxable income for employees. Annual parking permits can also be upgraded or downgraded at any time to meet each employee’s parking needs throughout the year.
Parking Services also has hourly Pay-by-Space credit/debit parking meters available in popular areas such as Parking Lot F and on the first level of each parking structure.
Public Transportation:
For those wishing to use public transportation, there are nearly 2,000 free parking spaces available at the Cityline/Bush Train Station Park-and-Ride at 1300 E President George Bush Tpke, Richardson, TX 75082. From there, users may ride the Comet Cruiser bus line to campus, free of charge and with no transit pass nor UTD ID required to ride.
Parking & Transportation Services and Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) also partner to provide affordable access to public transportation for UT Dallas faculty and staff members by offering discounted annual DART passes to faculty and staff. To purchase an annual pass, log in and complete a Faculty & Staff DART Pass Application.
